Students for Same-Day

During the 2024 election, Babe Vote organizers at UNLV discovered something disturbing on election day: students being turned away at the polls.

Nevada prides itself on being a leader in ballot access. The state’s same-day voter registration policy allows all eligible voters to just show up to the polls, no matter their registration status. It’s an excellent policy that helps ensure better access to the right to vote. Our ask to the state is simple: make good on that promise. There are students currently being left behind!

Nevada requires that same-day registrants have a Nevada ID. This led to out-of-state UNLV students (and likely students across multiple campuses) from voting on election day.

Classes at NSHE campuses begin in late August. This means every student who studies in-person is a Nevada resident and eligible to vote (having lived in the state for more than 30 days).

We demand that an exception be made for NSHE students to this policy or that the legislature remove the ID requirement altogether (as it is not required in all other same-day states).
